  5. Thank you for buying WillMaker 8 for Windows. We hope you
  6. will enjoy using this product and find it useful. We have
  7. worked hard to make this product as trouble free as possible.
  8. This file contains important information that did not make it
  9. into the manual but that you should be aware of.
  10.  
  11. We've done our best to ensure that WillMaker is legally 
  12. up-to-date when published. Nonetheless, laws can and do 
  13. change. We periodically update our software to reflect 
  14. changes in the law. To make sure that you're using the 
  15. most recent and most legally up-to-date version of
  16. WillMaker, go to the "Resources and Support" page on

  35. NEW FEATURES IN WILLMAKER 8
  36. WillMaker 8 includes seven new authorization and agreement 
  37. forms to help you take care of loved ones, pets and property.
  38. These new forms are available by clicking the "Your 
  39. Authorizations and Agreements" icon on the main document
  40. choice screen. See the Legal Manual, Chapter 16, for more
  41. information.
  42.  
  43.  - Temporary Guardianship Authorization. Use this 
  44. authorization if you will be leaving your child in the 
  45. care of another adult for a few days or longer. 
  46.  
  47.  - Authorization for Minor's Medical Treatment. This form 
  48. permits another adult to authorize necessary medical care for 
  49. your child during a specified activity, such as after-school 
  50. sports, or when your child is in the care of that adult for 
  51. an extended period of time. 
  52.  
  53.  - Authorization for Foreign Travel with Minor. Use this 
  54. authorization if your child will be traveling outside the 
  55. United States with another adult.
  56.  
  57.  - Authorization to Drive a Motor Vehicle. This is the form to 
  58. use when you lend your car or other motor vehicle to someone 
  59. other than a close relative (someone with the same last name as 
  60. yours), if you won't be easily available to confirm that the 
  61. driver has your permission to use the vehicle.
  62.  
  63.  - Child Care Agreement. Use this agreement to hire a
  64. babysitter or nanny to care for your child.
  65.  
  66.  - Elder Care Agreement. Use this agreement to hire someone to 
  67. care for an older parent or other relative. 
  68.  
  69.  - Pet Care Agreement. Use this agreement whenever you need to 
  70. board an animal with a friend, relative or neighbor for a 
  71. significant length of time.

  74. In addition to these new forms, WillMaker 8 has these additional 
  75. new features:
  76.  
  77.  - Full Names List integration. Every name used in all WillMaker 
  78. documents is now stored in the Names List. This allows you to 
  79. easily change contact information through the "Edit Names List" 
  80. command in the Edit menu. 
  81.  
  82.  - Automatically inserting additional information. If you
  83. have already entered contact information for a person or
  84. organization, that information is automatically inserted into
  85. the relevant interview fields whenever you again enter that name
  86. in any document interview. This new feature means you won't need
  87. to reenter contact information each time you use the same name
  88. in a document. See User's Manual, Part 5D3, for more information
  89. on the Names List.

  91.  - Save-for-Spouse feature. Some married couples may want to
  92. create "identical" wills. By this, we mean wills that differ
  93. only in that all instances of the names of the will writer and
  94. the spouse are reversed. WillMaker 8 allows you to easily do
  95. this. See the User's Manual, Appendix 4, for more information.

  97.  - Larger window size. WillMaker's default window size is 
  98. larger than it was in version 7. In addition, if you change
  99. the window size, WillMaker 8 remembers this setting the next
  100. time you open the program.

  102.  - Guidebook in larger font. WillMaker 8 allows you to increase
  103. the font size in the Guidebook (i.e., the help that appears on
  104. the right-hand side of the screen). To do so, choose "Show
  105. Guidebook in a Larger Font" from the View menu.

  108. IF YOU UPDATED TO WILLMAKER 8.1 USING A PATCH
  109. Important changes have been made to WillMaker's Legal Manual
  110. in WillMaker 8.1. Specifically, estate tax law information and 
  111. information in Chapter 14, "Healthcare Directives," have been 
  112. updated to reflect recent legal developments. If you are using 
  113. WillMaker 8.1 to create a will or healthcare directive, refer 
  114. to the Legal Manual contained in the help file (accessible 
  115. through WillMaker's Help menu). This information has NOT been
  116. updated in the PDF version of the WillMaker 8's Legal Manual 
  117. that was installed with some earlier versions of WillMaker 8.

  119. Of course, these changes are also NOT reflected in the hard 
  120. copy of the WillMaker 8 Legal Manual. If you are using WillMaker
  121. 8.1 to create a will or healthcare directive, please refer to 
  122. the Legal Manual contained in the help file (accessible through 
  123. WillMaker's Help menu) rather than the hard copy
  124. WillMaker 8 Legal Manual.

  127. READ YOUR DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU SIGN THEM
  128. It's your responsibility to make sure that the documents
  129. created with this program accurately reflect your wishes. Read
  130. your documents carefully BEFORE you sign them and make sure
  131. that you understand them. Please refer to the Legal Manual and
  132. the Guidebook for help.

  135. CONVERTING WILLMAKER 6 WILLS TO WILLMAKER 8 FORMAT
  136. The WillMaker 8 will is far more complex than that in WillMaker
  137. 6. Although WillMaker 8 lets you convert a WillMaker 6
  138. portfolio to WillMaker 8 format, it is possible that some of
  139. the information you entered in WillMaker 6 will not show up in
  140. your new WillMaker 8 will. 
  141.  
  142. To make sure that your will says exactly what you want it to,
  143. we strongly recommend that you create your will from scratch
  144. using WillMaker 8. However, if you do convert WillMaker 6
  145. documents--especially your will--we urge you to carefully read
  146. them to make sure that they reflect your wishes. If they do not,
  147. use WillMaker 8's Review/Change feature to go back and make the
  148. necessary corrections.

  150. WillMaker 7 files can be read into WillMaker 8 without problems.
  151. Of course, you should read all documents thoroughly before
  152. signing them.

  155. versions of WillMaker, see the User's Manual, Appendix 3.

  158. PRINT OPTIONS
  159. Generally, you should not need to change any of the default 
  160. formatting for your documents. The attorneys at Nolo have 
  161. checked the documents using the standard "default" settings.  
  162. Using these settings, we have verified that signature lines 
  163. and witness lines appear as they are supposed to. If you
  164. change the font or point size from the default settings, it
  165. is up to you to verify that the signature page contains some
  166. language of the document, and that the witness lines all
  167. appear on the same page.

  169. To restore the default settings at any time, return to the 
  170. WillMaker application window, choose Print Options from the 
  171. File menu, and when the options dialog comes up, click on the 
  172. "Use Defaults" button.

  175. LONG NAMES MAY BE SPLIT INTO TWO NAMES IN THE NAMES LIST
  176. If you enter a very long name in a multi-line field, and the
  177. name wraps to a new line, the name will be split into TWO
  178. names. You must use names short enough so that they don't
  179. wrap. If you see a name wrapping to a second line, shorten it
  180. before you click on the "Next" button.

  183. FILES IN THE PORTFOLIO BACKUPS FOLDER
  184. For your protection, WillMaker automatically creates backups
  185. of your portfolio file every time you work on it. These files
  186. are kept in a folder within the WillMaker 8 folder called 
  187. "Portfolio Backups."
  188.

  190. OPENING FILES IN THE PORTFOLIO BACKUPS FOLDER
  191. To protect you from inadvertently overwriting your backups, you 
  192. will not be able to open a portfolio file while it's stored in 
  193. the Portfolio Backups folder. If there's a problem with your 
  194. "real" portfolio file and you therefore need to use the backup, 
  195. you must first move it out of the Portfolio Backups folder and 
  196. into the same folder as the WillMaker 8 executable 
  197. file (WM8.EXE).

  200. PRINTER INCOMPATIBILITIES
  201. Nolo has made every effort to ensure that WillMaker documents 
  202. will print correctly regardless of the printer you use. 
  203. Nonetheless, printer anomalies can occur. If you encounter
  204. any problems when printing your documents, you can "export" 
  205. your document and print it from your word processor. Please 
  206. contact Nolo technical support to report the problem so that 
  207. we can investigate and fix the problem where possible.

  210. PRINT PREVIEW IN LARGE FONTS
  211. To preview a document without having to scroll sideways, set
  212. the View of the Print Preview window to Normal (instead of Page
  213. View) when running in large fonts.

  216. PALETTE PROBLEMS ON SPLASH SCREEN
  217. If you're running 256 colors and have Netscape Navigator or 
  218. other programs open when you start WillMaker, the colors on the 
  219. splash screen may not appear right. Don't worry about it.
  220. There's nothing wrong with the software.

  223. RESIZING THE WM8 PROGRAM WINDOW UNDER WINDOWS XP
  224.  
  225. If you run WillMaker under the Windows XP operating system, 
  226. you may notice that some screen elements do not redraw 
  227. correctly when you maximize the program window (or subsequently 
  228. restore the window to its previous size after maximizing it). 
  229. To correct this problem: 
  230. 1. Right-click on the file WM8.EXE or any shortcut to that 
  231. EXE file.
  232. 2. Select "Properties".
  233. 3. Click the Compatibility tab.
  234. 4. Check the box next to "Disable visual themes".
  235. 5. Click "OK".
  236. WillMaker should now maximize and restore correctly.
